April 20, 2006: Beach clean-up and marine biodiversity conservation program for The American School of Bombay and Beacon High School

On April 20th, 2006 Reef Watch Marine Conservation organized a beach clean-up at Carter Road, Bandra as part of a marine biodiversity awareness program for the Beacon High School and the American School of Bombay. Students and other participants joined hands with BMC staff to clear this part of the coast and mangroves of plastic debris.

The event was a great success. The children saw at close quarters, the state of affairs of the mangroves at Carter Road, Bandra. They immediately realized that no creature would opt to live in an environment that is overflowing with plastic and other debris. They could see that the trash build-up was slowly choking a whole cycle of life which will eventually affect all of us.

The children expressed a sense of accomplishment when they participated in the cleaning with BMC employees and other volunteers. The faculty and students of both the schools were very keen to sustain the fervour through periodic events addressing environment conservation.

The clean-up was followed by a presentation by Reef Watch Marine Conservation on Marine Biodiversity, the threats and the vision. The response of students was full of concern about various aspects of environment degradation.

Mitali Dutt Kakar, Head of Reef Watch Marine Conservation, then told the children how her experiences with marine life and stressed the need for youth involvement in marine conservation efforts
