The overall aim of the Project
is to generate baseline information to assess the vitality
of the dugong in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Population
and distribution studies will provide a measure of the
status as the first step towards species conservation.
All related information, based on first-hand observations
& experience by the scientific team with local support,
will be collated as a database on the species and its
habitat. This will be shared with all stakeholders, for
habitat protection. Involvement of local inhabitants will
ensure the survival of the species in the absence of the
research team in the area.
To determine the population status and distribution
of dugongs in the Andaman & Nicobar islands
To identify the main causes of mortality of / principal
threats to the dugong in the region
To identify and monitor potential sea grass habitats
of the dugongs
To understand local outlook on dugong conservation
To develop methodologies for long term monitoring
of the Dugong that is best suited for the region
To form local community teams for sustained monitoring
To demarcate favourable sites for detailed follow-up
studies
To form a local network to monitor key areas
To photo-document the dugong and its habitat
To compile necessary information for a conservation
and management action plan for the Andaman & Nicobar
Islands
