The
Oceans are home to a vast majority of life-forms
on earth, and yet they are used as mere dumping
grounds in most Indian cities. Over 5000
tons of untreated garbage is released
into the sea everyday in Mumbai alone! This degrades
the marine environment, and toxic compounds which
include heavy metals enter into the food chain,
some of which is consumed by us daily!
Our “Ocean Clean-up
Campaigns” were carried out to
create awareness about the degradation of our
coastal environment. The primary objective of
these Clean-up Campaigns is to awaken the community
at large to the urgent need for conserving our
coasts and seas. Schools, the NCC, residents’
associations, the BMC, the Indian Navy and many
celebrities have participated in these Events.
Through our Ocean Clean-up Campaigns, RWMC
strives to gather students, volunteer groups,
corporate bodies and concerned citizens under
the common umbrella of adopting the oceans to
conserve them. The highlight of the campaigns
was a symbolic one-day Clean-up of the Coast
at a chosen venue, along with interactive discussions
at the venue on Marine Conservation issues.
Painting competitions and Street Plays by children
on the theme of “Clean Oceans” were
conducted, for added perspective.
Clean-up sessions with schools are accompanied
by presentations on marine life and the threats
to our marine environment.
What Mumbai needs is a synergy between Civic
Administration, Corporates, Law Enforcement
Agencies, Conservation Agencies, Educational
Institutions, youth and the general public.
We are sure that schools can be instrumental
in creating this synergy that can make all of
us realize that WE
ARE THE ENVIRONMENT!
