RWMC Ocean Clean Up Day on 22nd January, 2005

"This is our hope : that the children born today still have twenty years hence, a bit of green under bare feet, a breath of clean air to breathe, a patch of blue water to sail upon and a whale on the horizon to set them dreaming”

Jacques-Yves Cousteau

On January 22 2005, we took another step towards the conservation of our Oceans & Coast with one more Ocean Clean-up Drive. This Drive was initiated by Reef Watch Marine Conservation along with Indian Architects & Builders to sustain the fervour generated by previous Clean-up effort (October 2, 2004). This Drive was part of the “Blue – Celebrating the Waterfront” Mumbai Festival. The enthusiastic response and vigorous support from volunteers from a wide cross-section of society have strengthened the objectives of our ongoing Awareness Campaign.

Mitali Dutt Kakar, the Director of Reef Watch envisioned this Campaign, as periodic costal clean up events, a symbolic effort to inculcate awareness and initiate action to protect our marine life & environment.

The Event held at Carter Road received active participation from the Indian Navy, BMC, BMC Schools, Shishuvan School and the Bandra Residents Association. Celebrities who participated included director Ken Gosh, Singer Kailash Kher and Meghna Naidu.

The Event took off at 2:00 pm carrying on till 6:00. Non-biodegradable litter, in great quantities, was cleared from the waterfront. The Event, conducted with public involvement & participation, helped focus on the effects of callous practices that ruin & threaten our coastal environment.

We believe the repeated emphasis on Clean Waterfronts will awaken the general public to the need for sustaining the movement on their own. This is our Mission!
