| Tata Power
Company Ltd. (TPCL) and Reef Watch Marine Conservation
(RWMC) have collaborated in an Education & Awareness
initiative on Electrical Power Conservation with Mumbai
Schools. |
|
| “We will keep
Mumbai Powerfull” is a Project to bring
the realization of an impending energy crisis to the most
important segment – our youth!
It is an initiative organized by Tata Power and
Reef Watch to reach out to the schools of Mumbai
to help curb excessive use of power.
We must, or face the consequences! |
| |
| This TATA –
Reef Watch initiative is an informal Club comprising
of Schools / Schoolchildren to understand and advocate
restraint and caution in the consumption of electrical
power. The Club is founded on a clear understanding of: |
| |
| |
The Energy Cycle |
| |
Impact of increased power-demands on
the environment |
| |
Impact of everyday activities and increasing
consumerism on power-demand |
| |
Resource-limitations |
| |
Our needs and excesses |
| |
The economic benefits of cooperation |
| |
|
| |
The Club sensitizes schoolchildren (Classes
VII – IX), on issues relating to energy and resources,
and their importance from various perspectives. |
| |
The campaign envisages the participation
of at least 15 schools of Mumbai. RWMC would provide basic
information on the subject through audio-visual presentations
and interactive talks at schools. In these sessions, topics
such as energy resources, energy and power, generation
and distribution of electrical power would be
discussed. This would be followed up with the interpretation
of electricity bills and the monitoring of consumption
patterns in individual homes, relating it to commonly
used appliances. By the end of this phase, it is expected
that the students will be able to identify some of the
excesses practised in their homes. This will initiate
an awareness process that can spread
vertically (to adults and to younger children) as well
as laterally (in the neighbourhood). |
| |
Students will carry out an elementary
Energy-Audit in their homes. Our focus, at this stage,
is to enable students to identify and verify the
utilization of power in specific activities / appliances
through their own observations. |
| |
An Energy-Workshop
will then be organized with students and experts
from Tata Power to examine means of optimizing
power-utilization in homes by detailing more energy-efficient
practices in daily life, so that this can reflect in subsequent
electricity bills |
| |
Students can share their experiences
and findings to a minimum number of 5 families in their
neighbourhood, over a period of 4 – 6 weeks. The
initiative will then begin to assume the proportions of
a community awareness campaign. |
| |
This stage will be completed by September
so that the increased awareness can begin to take effect
by October, when load-demands rise substantially. |
| |
At the end of the academic year, a POWER-FULL
Event can be organized with adequate media coverage
where students / schools can express their understanding
obtained by this exercise in creative ways. TPCL, RWMC
and the Club Members can plan strategies to expand the
initiative in scope and content. |
